Lt. Governor honors SETF with 2005 Environmental Hero Award
SETF was one of 13 citizens, cities, or groups to receive Lt. Governor Pat Quinn’s 2005 Environmental Hero Award in a December ceremony at the Shedd Aquarium. The award was given to SETF primarily based on our work to win the 20 year landfill moratorium for Chicago—effectively preventing two multimillion ton landfill expansions in the Southeast and Far South Sides. Many thanks to the Lt. Governor for, as stated in the award, “recognizing our commitment to providing and maintaining a healthful environment for this and future generations in Illinois.”
Hegewisch Marsh restoration to be funded.
Lt. Governor Quinn and Mayor Daley accepted a $750,000 National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service February 1st at a downtown press conference. The grant is the first of its kind given to the state of Illinois and will launch the development of the Hegewisch Marsh (130th-134th/Torrence) into a premier conservation, educational and research area, once it is coupled with the Ford Calumet Environmental Center. The funds will go toward removal of invasive species, installation of native plants, and other changes to the habitat to benefit coastal wetland-dependent plants and animals. Work is expected to begin in July 2006 and continue through June 2008. For more information, please attend an update meeting Tuesday, February 21st, 6:30pm, at the Hegewisch Library or contact Nicole Kamins at (312) 744-5959.
Come back to find information on upcoming public meetings, public comment periods, legislative issues and other happenings where you can voice your concerns about our environment.
